Necessary expenses for Ukrainian refugees: apply for compensation

As a refugee from Ukraine, you may have necessary expenses you are unable to pay yourself. Such as unexpected travel or care expenses, or expenses following the birth of a child. In some cases, you are eligible for compensation for these specific (extraordinary) expenses. If you are staying at a care institution and you are paying a monthly fee to do so, you can still contact us.

When are you eligible for compensation?

  • The expenses you have incurred must be necessary. Necessary expenses may include travel expenses or expenses for urgent personal medical reasons.

  • You are unable to cover these costs yourself using your income from work or living allowance.

  • You are unable to be compensated for the expenses in any other way. For example through your health insurance or under the Medical Care for Ukrainians Regulation.

Conditions

  • You are a Ukrainian refugee.

  • You live at a municipal or private shelter in the municipality of Utrecht.

  • You are covered by the Temporary Protection Directive (RTB).

  • You are registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP) of the municipality of Utrecht.

  • You must always apply for compensation of your expenses in advance. Except when you are unable to do so due to an emergency.

Applying for compensation

You must always apply for compensation in advance.

We will contact you to discuss your application with you. We will also ask for additional information to complete your application. This may include:

  • your Citizen Service Number (BSN) .

  • your Dutch bank account number, if you have one. We will ask for your name as is written on your bank card.

  • the reason why you are applying for compensation. Please describe your situation in as much detail as possible.

  • a referral from a doctor, for example, or any other proof to show that these expenses are necessary.

  • proof of the expenses you expect to incur. This could be a quote or a provisional bill, for example.

Apply for compensation

Once you have applied

We will assess your application. We will take your personal and special circumstances into account. You will receive a response as soon as possible. We will try to contact you within a week. You will receive our final decision within 8 weeks at the latest.
